The Local Support Provider (LSP) program of SAS Computing began around 1997 and aimed to bring dedicated computing support staff to various departments throughout the School of Arts and Sciences. An LSP would also coordinate funding for various teaching and research projects with a technological basis.
The current Biology LSP, Alex Reynolds, was hired in November 1997 and has been here since. Various projects he has been involved with include:
- Classroom renovations of 10 and 109 Leidy Labs
- Adding technology to 101, 102, 103 and 403 Goddard Labs
- Establishment of one of Penn's first 802.11b wireless networking deployments
- Establishing wireless laptop carts and mobile gel documentation stations for undergraduate wet labs
- Acquiring digital video and imaging equipment and software
- Setting up one of Penn's first department web sites to maintain course web pages
- Establishing a dedicated, departmental server facility
- Establishing a department-level backup service
In March 2006, a second full-time LSP, Byron Azarm, has been hired to bring additional resources to bear on Biology's needs, bringing a new range of technical and customer support skills. Projects he plans to work on will be marked here shortly.
