Backup options within a research lab
When
hard drives go bad, losing research data, documents and email can be a catastrophic
event, meaning lost productivity, lost research, and ultimately, lost grants.
Because data recovery shops like Ontrack and DriveSavers can charge from $1500 to $10000 to recover information from "dead" or damaged hard drives, we strongly urge research PIs to consider the purchase of a lab-wide backup server, with sufficient capacity to cover the data archive needs of the entire lab. A backup server can pay for itself quickly, in addition to providing peace of mind.
We can host your backup server in our Department Server Facility as well as provide ongoing backup service and account maintenance for you and your staff. Contact us at any time to schedule an appointment. We'll discuss your needs and provide more precise equipment specifications and cost estimates.
