Accessing your facstaff.sas email account
This document explains how to configure various email clients to access the facstaff.sas email system.

Webmail
Your facstaff.sas account can be accessed through the SAS Webmail site (https://webmail.sas.upenn.edu/) with any modern web browser.
However, please remember to select facstaff.sas from the server list:
Apple Mail
Apple Mail is an email client packaged with the Mac OS X operating system and can be found in the Applications folder. Apple Mail is presently the email client we recommend for daily usage by Mac OS X users.
The instructions that follow may appear slightly different on versions of Apple Mail that ship with Mac OS X 10.3 and earlier, but the information requested is the same. Let us know if you have any questions.
Do not delete your old mail.sas account. Create a NEW account with these instructions.
Pull down the Mail menu and select Preferences...

Click once on the Accounts button in the preferences window:
Click once on the + button to add a new account:
Select IMAP as the account type, enter a new Account Description and your Full Name and Email Address into the relevant fields:
For the Incoming Mail Server field, type in facstaff.sas.upenn.edu and then enter your User Name and Password selected during the migration steps:
For the Outgoing Mail Server field, type in facstaff.sas.upenn.edu, put a checkmark next to Use Authentication, and then enter your User Name and Password selected during the migration steps:
If the information you entered is correct, click on Continue to proceed:
Click the Done button to finish adding a new account:
Make sure that the Account Information tab is selected:
Click once on the Server Settings... button:
Make sure you have a checkmark next to Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and that you are using Password for the Authentication pull-down menu. Click OK afterwards:
Make sure that the Advanced tab is selected:
Make sure you have a checkmark next to Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes and Use SSL. Type in INBOX into the IMAP Path Prefix field. Close the preferences window afterwards to complete configuration:
Microsoft Entourage 2004
Microsoft Entourage 2004 is shipped with the Microsoft Office 2004 application suite and can be located in the Office 2004 folder. Entourage provides email, contact management and calendaring features and can be used with facstaff.sas.
Note: Do not delete your old mail.sas account. Create a NEW account with these instructions.
Pull down the Tools menu and select Accounts:
Click once on the New button:
Click once on the Configure account manually button within the account setup wizard window:
Pull down the Account type menu and select IMAP from the list:
Type in your name into the Account name field. Enter your Name and E-mail address into the fields of the Personal information section.
Within Receiving mail, type in your Account ID (the same as your facstaff.sas username) and type facstaff.sas.upenn.edu for the IMAP server field. Type in your password as well.
Within Sending mail, type in facstaff.sas.upenn.edu. Your account settings window should look similar to this:
Click once on the Click here for advanced receiving options button:
Place a checkmark next to This IMAP service requires a secure connection:
Close the options window and click once on the Click here for advanced sending options button:
Place a checkmark next to SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL). Place another checkmark next to SMTP server requires authentication. Click once on the radio button for Log on using and enter your Account ID (same as your username) and Password:
Close this smaller window and click once on the Options tab. Your window should look like the following at this point:
Type INBOX into the Root folder field.
Place a checkmark next to Live Sync (stay connected with server) as well the Only connect to Inbox and Connect immediately on launch items. There may be other options here which you will want to enable depending on your configuration:
Click OK when you're done to complete the setup of Entourage 2004.
Eudora (Mac OS X)
Eudora is available for free via the Penn Computing supported products page and can be used with facstaff.sas.
Note: Do not delete your old mail.sas account. Create a NEW account with these instructions.
Pull down the Special menu and select Settings...:
Type in your User Name (same as your PennKey username) and enter facstaff.sas.upenn.edu for the Mail Server field.
Type in your Real Name and enter facstaff.sas.upenn.edu for the SMTP Server field. Use your old email address in the Email Address field:
Click once on Checking Mail in the lefthand configuration column.
Make sure that IMAP is the selected Mail Protocol. Type in /INBOX in the Location Prefix (make sure not to forget the forward slash / at the beginning of the location, or Eudora will not work):
Click once on Sending Mail in the lefthand configuration column.
Check that Allow Authorization has a checkmark, and that sas.upenn.edu is the Default Domain:
Click once on SSL in the lefthand configuration column. You may need to scroll down the list of configuration categories to get to this item.
Select Optional (TLS) for the three SSL for POP, SSL for SMTP, and SSL for IMAP pull-down menus:
Click OK to begin using Eudora.
The first time you use Eudora with your facstaff account, you may be asked to select a location for deleted email and junk (spam) email. I recommend that you select subfolders from the <<Dominant>> profile for this purpose: Trash and caught-spam, respectively.
Eudora (Windows)
Eudora is available for free via the Penn Computing supported products page and can be used with facstaff.sas.
Note: Do not delete your old mail.sas account. Create a NEW account with these instructions.
Pull down the Tools menu and select Options...
Type in your Real Name and use your old email address in the Email Address field.
Enter facstaff.sas.upenn.edu for the Mail Server field. Type in your User Name (same as your PennKey username) and enter facstaff.sas.upenn.edu for the SMTP Server field. Check Allow Authentication:
Click once on Checking Mail in the lefthand configuration column.
Select If Available, STARTTLS from the Secure Sockets pull-down menu:
Click once on Incoming Mail in the lefthand configuration column.
Check that IMAP is selected in the Server configuration option. Leave the IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix field blank:
Click once on Sending Mail in the lefthand configuration column.
Add sas.upenn.edu to the Domain to add... field.
Select If Available, STARTTLS from the Secure Sockets pull-down menu:
Click OK to begin using Eudora.

Mozilla
Mozilla is a free product that combines the news and email reading functionality of Thunderbird and the web browsing features of Firefox into one application. Mozilla works on many platforms, including Mac OS X, Linux and Windows.

Pull down the Window menu and select Mail & Newsgroups:
Pull down the Edit menu and select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings...:
Click once on the Add Account button:
Click on the right triangle to accept this setting:
Enter your real name and email address into the Your Name and Email Address fields:
Select the IMAP server radio button and type facstaff.sas.upenn.edu for both incoming and outgoing server fields:
Use your email address or real name for the Account Name:
Use your PennKey username as the Incoming Username:
If the settings are correct, click on Finish:
Click once on the SSL radio button to use a secure connection.
Make sure to specify a port number of 25 in the Port field:
Click once on the Server Settings category in the lefthand column.
Place a checkmark next to the Use secure connection (SSL) checkbox:
Click once on the Advanced button in the middle of the window:
Type INBOX into the IMAP server directory field, and be sure to uncheck the "Use IDLE command if the server supports it" checkbox before proceeding:
Click OK twice to begin using Mozilla for email.
Microsoft Outlook Express
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 is a free email client with junk mail filtering. It is bundled with Internet Explorer 6 in Windows 2000 and XP Professional. We strongly recommend using a different email client altogether as historically it has been a very unsafe product, with new and often serious security vulnerabilities being found on a daily basis. Nonetheless we present these instructions for users seeking an alternative to Eudora (Windows) and Thunderbird or Mozilla.
Note: Do not delete your old mail.sas account. Create a NEW account with these instructions.
Pull down the Tools menu and select Accounts...
Click once on the Add button and select Mail:
Type in your full name in the Display name field:
Type in your E-mail address:
Set your incoming mail server to IMAP.
Type facstaff.sas.upenn.edu into both the Incoming mail and Outgoing mail fields:
Type in your facstaff.sas Account name and Password:
Click Finish to continue:
Back in the Internet Accounts window, click once on your facstaff.sas account and click once on the Properties button:
Click once on the Servers tab and make sure there is a checkmark next to My server requires authentication:
Click once on the Advanced tab and place checkmarks next to the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) items:
Click OK and Close to begin using your facstaff.sas email account.
Mozilla Thunderbird
Mozilla Thunderbird is a free newsgroup and email client with excellent junk mail filtering and a nice interface. It is an excellent complement to the Mozilla Firefox web browser. Thunderbird is available for both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems, among others.
Note: Do not delete your old mail.sas account. Create a NEW account with these instructions.
Pull down the File menu and select New -> Account... :
Click Continue:
Enter your real name in Your Name and your email address in Email Address:
Select IMAP as the type of incoming server and enter facstaff.sas.upenn.edu as the Incoming Server:
Enter your username (which will be the same as your PennKey username) into the Incoming User Name field:
Enter your email address as your Account Name:
Click Done after reviewing the information you've entered:
There's a little more work, yet. Pull down the Tools menu and select Account Settings...:
You can enter a Reply-to Address and Organization information here:
Click once on the Server Settings category from the options on the lefthand column.
Click once on the SSL radio button:
Click once on the Advanced button in the middle of the settings window:
Type INBOX into the IMAP server directory field, and be sure to uncheck the "Use IDLE command if the server supports it" checkbox before proceeding:
Click OK twice to return to the Thunderbird mail viewer window.
