Digital Imaging Lab - Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED
The Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED is a 35mm slide and negative film scanner connected to the Power Macintosh G5/1.6, located in the Digital Imaging Lab (DIL).
Quality is rich, with scans up to 4000 dpi at 24-bit color. The Nikon is controlled via the Nikon Scan Photoshop plug-in, which captures single slides, batch slides, and strip scans.

Please note that the use of the scanner is limited to capturing research and personal data. The scanner may not be used for copying protected works, unless you have explicit permission from the copyright owner to reproduce such work.
Getting started...
At a minimum, you will need to bring the slides or film that you want to scan. The G5/1.6 has a Documents folder for people to temporarily store their image scans. However, we recommend you move data to a Zip 100 cartridge, CD-R, DVD-R, USB thumb-drive, or network volume as soon as possible.
Scanning single slides
Follow these steps to activate the Super CoolScan 5000ED and scan single slides within the Nikon Scan Photoshop plug-in:
- Check that the Super CoolScan 5000ED is turned on: the front LED should be lit and colored green
- If the scanner is not on, you must first shut down the Mac, saving any open documents, if necessary. Then power the scanner and power the Macintosh
- Once the computer is fully booted, click once on the Graphics folder tab within the Dock, located at the bottom of the screen
- Click once on Adobe Photoshop 7.0
- Under the [File->Import] menu, select [Nikon Scan]. You may need to wait a few moments for the Nikon Scan applet to open

- Check to see that the green status light on the front of the unit is glowing steadily. Do not insert or remove media or media adapters into the unit while the status light is blinking
- Make sure that slide adapter is in the adapter slot
- If the slide adapter is not in the adapter slot, remove the adapter and insert the proper one
- Place the slide in the Super CoolScan 5000ED groove, with the short side first, with the reflective base up and the matte emulsion side down.
- Under the Film type menu button of the Nikon Scan application, make sure that Positive is selected:

- Under the Color Space menu button, select the type that corresponds to your film, either Grayscale for black and white, or Calibrated RGB for color:

- Press the Preview button
- Drag the coners of the Marquee to select which portion of the slide you wish to scan
- If you wish, you may alter the image by using the Tool Chest. If the Tool Chest is not open, click on the Tools button in the Nikon Scan applet, and select Tool Palette 1:

- The Tool Chest contains a number of different palettes which will allow you to: rotate, resize, crop, enhance, and adjust the bit depth and resolution of the image
- If you would like more information about using the Tool Chest, please consult the Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED manual, pages 44-46. This manual is located to right of the G5's LCD display.
Press Scan to scan the image; once finished, the Nikon Scan application will open the file in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for editing. Once the image is done scanning, confirm that the green status light is not blinking, then press the eject button on front of the unit to eject the media.
Scanning batches of slides
You may use the Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED along with the SF-210 Slide Feeder to scan batches of up to approximately 50 slides.
- Check that the Super CoolScan 5000ED is turned on: the front LED should be lit and colored green
- If the Super CoolScan 5000ED is not on, you must first shut down the Mac, saving any open documents, if necessary. Then power the Super CoolScan 5000ED and power the Macintosh
- Check to see that the green status light on the front of the unit is glowing steadily. Do not insert or remove media or media adapters into the unit while the status light is blinking
- Remove the SF-210 Slide Feeder from the desk drawer underneath the black Epson Photo Stylus 1280 printer
- Flip the scanner over onto its left side so that it is lying horizontally
- Remove the current media adapter from the Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED and replace it with the SF-210 Slide Feeder
- Open the magazine cover, pull back the feed push plate to the end of its grove, and hook it to the notch so that it does not spring back to its original position:

- Place the slides in the magazine with the long end of the aperture up and the emulsion surface facing the push plate, so that the images in the slides are reversed when viewed from the magazine side
- Do not attempt to load slides past the load mark, designated by an arrowing facing a thin line
- Once the slides are loaded, release the push plate from the notch and slide it back until it rests against the slides:

- Once the slides are fully loaded, close the magazine cover, and click once on the Graphics folder tab within the Dock
- Select Nikon Scan 4:
- Under the Film Type menu button of the Nikon Scan application, make sure that Positive is selected:
- Under the Color Space menu button, select the type that corresponds to your film, either Grayscale for black and white, or Calibrated RGB for color:

- Click on the Scanner menu, and select Slide Feeder:
- Specify the number of slides to be scanned
- You will now be able to browse to a location in which to save your scans. Press the Browse button to bring up a finder window. Point this window at a convenient location, such as a personal folder inside the Documents folder:

- Check to see that your options match those shown below:
Your images will now proceed to scan to the specified folder. Once the images are done scanning, confirm that the green status light is not blinking, then remove the slides from the eject bin. Once you are done removing the slides, you must replace the SF-210 Slide feeder with the original media adaper.
Please replace the slide feeder with the original media adapter and return it to the desk drawer!
Scanning 35mm negative strips
You may use the Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED to scan strips of film no less than two and and no more than six frames long. Follow these steps to activate the Super CoolScan 5000ED and scan 35mm negative strips within the Nikon Scan Photoshop plug-in application:
- Check that the Super CoolScan 5000ED is turned on: the front LED should be lit and colored green
- If the Super CoolScan 5000ED is not on, you must first shut down the Mac, saving any open documents, if necessary. Then power the Super CoolScan 5000ED and power the Macintosh
- Once the computer is fully booted, check to see that the green status light on the front of the unit is glowing steadily. Do not insert or remove media or media adapters into the unit while the status light is blinking
- Make sure that strip film adapter is in the adapter slot
- If the strip film adapter is not in the adapter slot, remove the adapter and insert the proper one
- click once on the Graphics folder tab within the Dock
- Select Nikon Scan 4:
- Holding the film lightly between thumb and the forefinger, place it in the Super CoolScan 5000ED slot, with the reflective base up and the matte emulsion surface down. The film will be automatically fed into the adapter when inserted a short distance
- Under the Film type menu button of the Nikon Scan application, make sure that Neg(Color) or Neg(Mono) is selected. Use either option depending on which corresponds to the type of film being used.

- Under the Color Space menu button, select the type that corresponds to your film, either Grayscale for black and white, or Calibrated RGB for color:

- Click on the Thumbnail Drawer tab to the upper right of the Settings pull-down menu. This will open the Thumbnail Drawer, which will allow you to select which frame or frames you wish to be scanned:

- To view the frames in the thumbnail drawer as small thumbnail previews, click on the display/hide thumbnails button:

- Select the frame or frames to be scanned by clicking on the associated thumbnail or frame number. To select multiple frames, hold the Command key while selecting each frame
- Press the Preview button
- If mutliple frames were scanned, you may select them individually by using the Thumbnail Drawer
- If you wish, you may alter the image by using the Tool Chest. If the Tool Chest is not open, click on the Tools button in the Nikon Scan applet, and select Tool Palette 1:

- Press the Scan button
- If you are only scanning one image, the image will appear in Nikon Preview. At this point, you may save and re-open it in Adobe Photoshop for further editing
- If you are scanning multiple images, please follow the steps below:
- You will now be able to browse to a location in which to save your scans. Press the Browse button to bring up a finder window. Point this window at a convenient location, such as a personal folder inside the Documents folder:

- Check to see that your options match those shown below:
Your images will now proceed to scan to the specified folder. Once the images are done scanning, they will be ejected. Confirm that the green status light is not blinking, then remove the negatives from the scanner.
Changing media adapters
The Nikon Super CoolScan 5000ED uses removable internal adapters to accept different types of media, such as 35mm film, single slides, and batches of slides.
- Check to see that the green status light on the front of the unit is glowing steadily. Do not insert or remove media or media adapters into the unit while the status light is blinking
- Make sure that there is no media present in either the single slide mount adapter or the strip film adapter. If media is present, press the eject button on the front of the unit to remove the media
- Grasp the edges of the media adapter with your thumb and forefinger and gently but firmly pull it out of the slide scanner
- Put the removed adapter into the desk drawer underneath the black Epson Photo Stylus 1280 printer. Also located are the additional media adapters which you can use for different types of media
- Place the new adapter into the scanner by pushing it gently but firmly into the front of the scanner
- The adapter will not insert if it is attempted to be placed in upside down. Do not force the adapter into the scanner if it will not fit properly
