BIOL008 Syllabus

This course will discuss human reproduction, including anatomy, physiology, hormonal control, genetics, development, infertility, contraception, sexual behavior, sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, and relevant basic molecular and cellular biology. In addition, this course will discuss sex differences and similarities in health and mortality, including relevant basic biology of the cardiovascular system and cancer.

Biology-A Guide to the Natural World (paperback), by David Krogh, 2002. Bulk Pack for Biol 8 available from Wharton Reprographics (has assigned readings by all authors except Krogh).

grading and exams

There will be three midterms. The third midterm will cover other STD through the end of the course and will be given as part of the final exam (probably on Thursday, Dec. 19, 8:30-10:30). The other hour of the final exam will be a cumulative, comprehensive final. There will be no make-up midterm exams. Your lowest midterm exam score will be dropped in calculating your course grade; if you miss a midterm, this midterm will be the one which will be dropped in calculating
your grade.

Your course grade will be the sum of: Maximum Possible Points

  • your top two midterm scores (200)
  • your score on the cumulative final (100)
  • your scores for two Essay Assignments (60)
  • your participation grade (40)
    Total (400)

In addition, a student may complete a third Essay Assignment for a maximum of 30 points extra credit.
