course information

textbook
The text for the course is Biology (6th edition) by
Campbell, Reece and Mitchell, Benjamin/Cummings Publishing Co.
Tapes of the lectures will be available in the multimedia
center in DRL.
grading and exams
There will be three hour-exams, each worth 100 points. Two
are scheduled as shown on the lecture syllabus; the third will
be given at the time of the final exam. The lowest of the three
hour exam scores will be dropped in calculating your final grade.
Each hour exam will have a mean which we will determine. Your
score on the hour exams will be expressed as how many points
above or below the mean and the two best values will be used
and the lowest will be discarded. No make-ups will be given
for the hour exams. A missed exam will be the one whose grade
is dropped. The final exam, which is comprehensive, covering
material from the entire semester, is worth 100 points. The
laboratory is worth 150 points. Thus a perfect score will be
450 points.
laboratory
In order to receive credit for the course, you must successfully
complete the laboratory program. Instructions for each exercise
should be read before coming to the laboratory. The laboratory
manual Biology 101 can be purchased at the University
Copy Service (UCS) in Houston Hall. The Photo Atlas for
Biology by Perry and Morton is also required, and can be purchased
at the Penn Bookstore. All work handed in must be carried out
individually.
