BIOL123 Syllabus

An intensive introductory laboratory course emphasizing microbiological, biochemical, genetic and molecular genetic experiments. Advanced Placement credit (BIOL 091) or BIOL 121 is a prerequisite. A description of advance placement policies can be found on the Biology website at http://www.bio.upenn.edu/programs/undergraduate/manual/main/06.ap/index.html Laboratories begin the week of 9/9.

The BIOL 121/123 Lab Manual is only available at the University Copy Service (located in Houston Hall, Tel: 215-898-5320). Instructions for each laboratory should be read before coming to lab. A dissection kit is not required.

grading and exams

The course will be graded on a 200 point scale with the following components:

  • Genetics problem set (20)
  • Virtual FlyLab report (20)
  • Weekly hand-ins (30)
  • Conclusions and Discussion supplements (30
  • Lab quizzes (40)
  • TA evaluation (10)
  • Final exam (50)

The final lab exam will be given at a time to be determined during the final exam period.
Final grades will be based strictly on performance in the following way: A (?180 points), B (?160 points), C (?140 points), D (?120 points), etc.
