BIOL 407 Syllabus

This course will focus on the molecular mechanisms by which fundamental cellular processes are disrupted in the development of cancer. The experimental basis for our current understanding of tumor initiation and progression will be emphasized. This course is open to juniors and seniors and will be limited to 20. Biol 121/122 and either
Biol 202 or Biol 221 is required.

The Biological Basis of Cancer (1998) R. McKinnel et al. (ed.) in addition to selected review and primary literature articles.

grading and exams

Mondays and Wednesdays will be reserved for lectures and discussion of central scientific topics relating to cancer. Each Friday class will be devoted to student presentations of an assigned research paper (2 students/paper). Each student will present once during the term.

This paper should be an exploration of a specific scientific advance relating to a particular question of interest. The topic will have to be fairly well focused, to allow a sufficiently in-depth discussion, and should be approved by the instructor. Ten typewritten pages is the upper limit.

Grades will be based on exams (mid-term and final - 25% each), the term paper (25%), and class presentation and participation (25%).
