textbook

Reading assignments indicate chapters (or page numbers) to be read before each lecture. Reading assignments may differ and changes will be announced in class.

    • Biology, 5th Edition, Campbell, Reece and Mitchell.

Lab manuals may be purchased at the University Copy Center (located at 36th and Chestnut on the first floor of the Sheraton). Instructions for each laboratory must be read before coming to lab. Students must successfully complete the laboratory in order to receive credit for BIOL 101.

grading and exams

There will be three one hour exams, each worth 100 points. Two are scheduled as shown on the lecture syllabus; the third will be given at the time of the final exam. The lowest score of the three hour exam will be dropped in calculating your final grade. Your score on the hour exams will be expressed as the number of points above or below the mean; the two best values will be retained and the lowest will be discarded. No make-ups will be given for the hour exams. A missed exam will be the one whose grade is dropped. The final exam, which is comprehensive, covering material from the entire semester, is worth 100 points. The laboratory is worth 150 points. Thus 450 points are possible.

resources for suceeding in BIOL 101

Because we cover a great deal of material in a short time, the important strategy for success is to keep up with the work on a regular basis. For example, it is very useful to review a day’s lecture notes later the same day in order to consolidate your learning and to clarify your notes while the material is still fresh in your mind.

In addition, identify any questions you have, so you can ask your questions at one of the weekly discussion sections for this course. These discussion sections provide a regular chance to ask questions, to hear discussions of difficult topics and other students’ questions and ideas, and to review old exam questions.

If you are encountering difficulties, you can also turn to your TA or the faculty instructor for help with the subject matter and advice. In addition, you can contact Academic Support Programs for tutoring or help with studying and test-taking skills.

lecture schedule

Please refer to the BIOL 101 PDF talk schedule for more information on this course.

Note: The code of Academic Integrity will be strictly enforced. Any violation will result in failure in the course and potentially other punitive action.
