textbook
Reading assignments indicate chapters (or page numbers) to be read before each lecture. Reading assignments may differ and changes will be announced in class.
Lab manuals may be purchased at the University Copy Center (located at 36th and Chestnut on the first floor of the Sheraton). A dissection kit will also be required. Instructions for each laboratory must be read before coming to lab. Students must successfully complete the laboratory in order to receive credit for BIOL 102.
weekly discussion sessions (optional)
There will be faculty-led and student-led discussions to help clarify topics covered in lectures. Faculty-led discussions will be held from 4-5 PM on Tuesdays in Goddard 101. Student-led discussions will be held from 7-8 PM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Goddard 101.
grading and exams
There will be three hour exams during the semester. The lowest hour exam grade will be dropped in computing your course grade. If you miss an hour exam, that exam will automatically be the one that is dropped in computing your course grade. There will be no make-ups for hour exams except in the case of serious long-term, medically certified illness. The final exam will be comprehensive. The course grade will be computed from the two highest hour exam scores (2 X 100 points), the final exam (100 points), and the laboratory score (150 points), for a total of 450 points.
lecture schedule
Please refer to the BIOL 102 PDF talk schedule for more information on this course.
academic integrity
All relevant University policies regarding Academic Integrity must be followed. This includes no cheating, no plagiarism and reporting any knowledge thereof. Please consult the Student Handbook or the appropriate web-page: http://www.college.upenn.edu/responsibilities/integrity.html
Note: The code of Academic Integrity will be strictly enforced. Any violation will result in failure in the course and potentially other punitive action.

Course
information
If you need to change lab sections, or if you cant get into a lab section that will fit your schedule (listed as full or closed), please email the Head TA, Chris Wills (cwills@sas.upenn.edu) with an explanation of your problem. She will try to find a lab for you to attend.
The lab schedule given in the syllabus does not include complete titles or chapter numbers of the labs. Your TAs will provide that information at the first lab. For the first week of lab we will be doing the Mutation and Natural Selection (Ch. 2) and the California Bucket (Ch. 13) labs.

Midterm I review and advice
The first midterm will be on Wednesday February 21st, during class time. You will not all be taking the exam in Leidy 10. Rooms for the exam will be announced on Monday Feb. 19th in class and posted to this website. The room that you go to will depend on your lab section. The midterm will cover all lecture material and associated reading assignments up to and including Ted Abels guest research lecture on Monday February 19th. The exam will NOT cover Chapter 49 on Sensory Mechanisms.
Nick Orfanidis will hold a review session on Monday February 19th from 6-8 PM in GD 101, and I will hold a review session on Tuesday February 20th from 7-9 PM in GD 101. These review sessions will replace the usual faculty-led and student-led weekly discussions, only for the week of 2/19/01.
Be sure to read the "Stem Cell Reading Assignment" that was posted to the course website on 1/23/01, and the "Nobel Prize Announcement: Signal Transduction in the Nervous System" that was posted to the website today.
