| BIOL 175 Syllabus + Schedule |
The primary objective of this course is to familiarize the student with the fundamental biological properties of microbes in both basic and applied terms. The lecture portion of the course covers, in some detail, the means by which microbes acquire and utilize energy, how they reproduce, how they interact with hosts, how they can cause disease and how hosts can recognize and deal with them. We will also consider how microbes are involved in the development of biotechnology and the application of this technology to questions of health and the environment. The laboratory portion of the course considers more applied aspects of microbiology, including culturing techniques, microscopy, diagnostic tests and microbe identification.

PCRID Report
Write a 3-page paper about the procedures used, the results obtained and their interpretations for the PCRID chapter. Specifically your paper should include a paragraph about the purpose of the procedure, a paragraph descrbing the methodology used (this is a very brief listing of what you did in words), one or two paragraphs showing the results obtained, discussion of the results and finally a paragraph about the organism identified and what it does. Note that the discussion part is the main chunk of the report while other parts are just 1-2 paragraphs. Your report is worth 10% of the Unknown Report. Every student is to construct his/her report independently.
The following downloadable files are numbered from 1 to 10. Use the file number that corresponds to the rightmost digit of your class unknown. For example, if you were assigned unknown # 47, use PCRID-Unk7 to write your report. Reports are due12 noon of Friday, May 4, 2001.
