textbook

I recommend that you purchase the textbook, Human Physiology, Eighth Edition, 2001, by Vander, Sherman and Luciano at the University Bookstore and a Bulk Pack containing all the other required readings from Wharton Reprographics. The text by Vander et al. will also be available on reserve in the Biomedical Library, Johnson Pavilion, 36th and Hamilton Walk.

grading and exams

Grades for this course will be based on:

    • class participation plus pop quizzes on the reading, 30 points
    • first oral report, 15 points
    • written research paper, 20 points
    • second oral report, 20 points
    • synthesis papers, 20 points

for a total of 105 points

    Notes:

    • Each reading assignment should be completed before class on the day it is assigned. To encourage thoughtful reading of assignments, questions on the reading will usually be distributed during the preceding class and student answers to these questions will be discussed in class. In addition, two or more pop quizzes will be given at the beginning of unspecified classes to ascertain whether you have retained the main points of the reading assigned for that day. During the pop quizzes you may use notes you have taken on the reading, but not the readings themselves.
    • The grade for your written research paper will be the average of your original grade and the grade for the revised paper, if you prepare a revision.
    • I do not encourage revisions of synthesis papers; if you desire, I will read a revised synthesis paper, but I will not grade it.
