Students will be introduced to the art of reading a scientific paper. Students will develop critical reading and analytic skills as well as an appreciation for experimental design and hypothesis testing. The course will focus on the mechanism(s) whereby infections may trigger autoimmune diseases such as rheumatic fever, diabetes, and lupus. Relevant techniques in molecular biology will be introduced. No prior knowledge of biochemistry, genetics, or immunology is expected.

    • Weekly Summary Paper (1page) 10%
    • Synthesis Paper 5%
    • Oral Presentations 15%
    • Final Paper 15%.

Students must complete all assignments to receive a passing grade for the course. assignments due on the Friday before class; they can be sent by email to Daniel Moore at moored@mail.med.upenn.edu. Please note that participation counts for 55% of the total grade or about 5% for each class period; thus, participation in each class is worth about one-half of a letter grade
