Dr. R. Scott Poethig: Patricia M. Williams Term Professor.

Dr. Poethig has been appointed to the Patricia M. Williams Term Chair in Biology. Dr. Poethig’s research focuses on the genetic regulation of morphogenesis in plants. He and his students recently discovered a novel class of non-coding RNAs called trans-acting siRNAs and elucidated the pathway for their biosynthesis. These small RNAs modulate expression of mRNAs critical of plant development. For more about Dr. Poethig’s research, see http://www.bio.upenn.edu/faculty/poethig/. The Patricia M. Williams Term Chair in Biology was established by Paul C. Williams, W’76, in honor of his mother.
