Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Program

Required Courses for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Track

All Graduate Students are required to take a minimum of six (6) courses listed below. However, the Advising Committee may recommend additional course work depending upon each student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Foundation Course (required)

BIOL 700 – Topics in Molecular, Cell, Developmental and Evolutionary Biology

Core Courses (required)

  BIOL 410 - Advanced Evolution
(This course will be taught in the Fall semester, every other year)
  BIOL 414 - Advanced Ecology
(This course will be taught in the Spring semester, every other year)

Core Electives (student will take one or both of these courses as determined by Advising Committee)

  BIOL 446 - Statistics
BIOL 615 - Current Topics in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
(This course will be taught every year in the semester for which a core course is not offered)
Thus, BIOL 615 will focus more on evolution when BIOL 414-Ecology is taught; and conversely, it will focus more on ecology when BIOL 410-Evolution is taught.

Track Electives (select remaining courses as recommended by Advising Committee from this list)

  BIOL 400 - Field Botany
  BIOL 415 - Freshwater Ecology
  BIOL 432 - Animal Cognition
BIOL 440 - Humans and the Environment
  BIOL 450 - Plant Systematics
BIOL 465 - Ecological Techniques in Conservation
  BIOL 535 - Ecological Modeling
BIOL 544 - Mathematics for Biologists
  BIOL 556 - Advanced Statistics
CAMB 617 - Emerging Infectious Diseases
  CAMB 752 - Genomics
  ENVS 504 - Biogeochemical Cycles
GCB 531 - Introduction to Genome Science
GCB 535 - Introduction to Bioinformatics
  GCB 536 - Computational Biology
GEOL 511 - Geology of Soils
  IMUN 506 - Immune Mechanisms
  IMUN 508 - Immune Responses

In addition to course work, EEB students will also be expected to do independent research each semester and for 10 weeks during the summer. Upon acceptance into the program, EEB students are situated in their advisor's lab and are expected to conduct lab work in that specific area, with special emphasis on in-depth research during the summer.

Once a student has completed coursework as stated by the Advising Committee, program requirements such as lab rotations, independent study, teaching duties, and passed both the Qualifying Exam and Preliminary Exam, the student is on dissertation status. Student will automatically be registered for BIOL 995- Dissertation each semester..

Depending upon funding, graduate students take 3 or 4 courses per semester.

First year students funded by Educational Fellowships may take up to 8 course units (CUs): 4 in the fall semester and 4 in the spring semester.

Usually, second-year students are funded by Teaching Fellowships. Depending upon the recommendations of the Advising Committee, students can take up to 7 courses per year: 3 in the fall semester, 3 in the spring semester and 1 during the summer semester.

Students funded by other means, such as Research Fellowships or Training Grants, take 4 course units for the fall and spring semesters for a total of 8 courses unit per year.
