The following e-mail message was sent to all current Biology majors on 30 March 2005:

Hello majors,

Just a few items that I've come across that might be of interest...

Nominate your favorite Biology TA! The University is accepting nominations for excellence in teaching by graduate students. Think back over all the wonderful interactions you've had with graduate students in the Biology department and acknowledge one who has made a significant contribution to your education. Nominations can be made online at http://www.upenn.edu/grad/ta/taprizeNOMform.html - but the deadline is tomorrow, March 31st!

Looking for a summer job?
Monell Chemical Senses Center (Philadelphia, PA) is accepting applications for their Science Research Apprentice Program. Apprentices will attend workshops and lectures while working with a Monell scientist for 8 weeks this summer. This is a paid apprenticeship. Applications can be obtained from http://www.monell.org/studentprogram/ and must be returned with a letter of recommendation from a science teacher by April 15th.

Bodega Marine Laboratory (north of San Francisco, CA) has openings for students interested in marine science careers in the Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) supported by NSF. Research projects will be arranged with a faculty member and could include marine or coastal environments, effects of pollution on marine life, biodiversity, or many others. The stipend for the 9 week program is $3500 and includes housing and meals at the station. For more information and applications, see http://www.bml.ucdavis.edu/student-info/researchexp.html. Applications must be received by April 29th.

Looking for a job after graduation?
MIT Center for Cancer Research has a full-time position available for a technical assistant in the lab of Dr. Tyler Jacks. A BS/BA in biology with experience in genetics or molecular or cellular biology is required. Primary responsibilities will be the generation and analysis of mouse models of human cancer. You will be responsible for managing the animal colony, PCR, immunohistochemistry and tissue culture. To find out more about the research in the lab, visit http://web.mit.edu/ccr/labs/jacks/index.html or for more information about the job, contact Meg McLaughlin.

Biology and Science Teachers for middle, upper and preparatory boarding schools in Texas and Georgia are needed. Contact me (Robin) for details.

A couple more items...
There will be an information session for the Fulbright grant program at the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships on Wednesday, April 6 at noon. CURF is located in the ARCH, 3601 Locust Walk on the second floor. The Fulbright program provides funding for travel, room and board for one academic year, insurance and full or partial tuition. These grants are available to senior undergraduates in all fields. Contact Cheryl Shipman at CURF if you have questions.

Mark your calendars...
The Symposium for Undergraduate Research in Biology (SURB) Poster Session will be Tuesday, April 26th from 2-5 pm (note this is a change in the date originally announced in the newsletter). If you are thinking of doing an independent research project, this is a great opportunity to see what your fellow Biology majors have done in labs all across campus. Students will be available by their posters to answer questions about their research. All are welcome!

I'm sure I'll get a dozen more announcements as soon as this is sent so stay tuned...
Enjoy!
