The following e-mail message was sent to all current Biology majors on 9 February 2007:

More summer research opportunities for you...

First, there is a brand new Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. This is a 12 week program open exclusively to Penn undergrads. Visit http://www.bio.upenn.edu/events/features/020207/index.html for more information and for a list of potential faculty mentors. You will need to develop a research project in conjunction with one of the faculty sponsors and submit your proposal by March 30.

USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies REU in Geobiology - Marine Science at the Interface between the Life and Earth Sciences offers an opportunity to conduct research in the areas of biogeochemistry of ocean sediments; evolution and population genetics of marine organisms; or ecosystem ecology. Visit http://biology.usc.edu/REU/ for more information. Hurry, deadline for applications is February 16.

Summer internship program in Biomedical Research. The NIH provides research opportunities in laboratories all across the country. For a list of participating NIH Institutes and Centers and for information on applying, go to http://www.training.nih.gov/student/sip/ Application deadline is March 1.

Summer field research needed for ecology/evolution study. The Institute for Plant Biology and Conservation is looking for field research assistants for a project on habitat fragmentation of tallgrass prairies. No experience necessary - tasks include measuring plant traits, hand-pollinating plants, and collecting insects. Applications are due March 9.

Have you already done some research and want to share it with the world? The Thomas Jefferson University Chapter of Sigma Xi is sponsoring a Student Research Day. Applications are now being accepted from undergraduates from area colleges (this means you!). Abstracts are due March 1. If you don't have a project to present yet, attend the poster presentations on April 12 in Bluemle Life Sciences Building at TJU and see what's new!

Speaking of research, it's not too late to submit an article to PennScience. They've extended their deadline to Sunday, February 11 (okay, so it's almost too late - hurry!). Use the submissions page on their website at http://www.pennscience.org
