Double Major in Biology, with a Molecular Biology Concentration, for Biochemistry Majors

A student who has completed a Biochemistry Major has already satisfied the Chemistry and Math requirements for the Molecular Biology Concentration. For Biochemistry Majors, Chem 451 and 452 can be used to substitute for the required Biol 402 and one of the additional required advanced Biology courses. In addition, 1 cu of BCHE 404 will be accepted in place of Biol 499, Independent Study.

To satisfy the requirement for introductory biology, Biochemistry Majors may take Biol 121, Biol 124, and 3 electives in the concentration (see the requirements for the Molecular Biology concentration). Alternatively, a student who has grades of B or better in at least two semesters of Chemistry taken at Penn; has completed Chem 251 with a B or better; and has taken (or is currently enrolled) in Chem 241, can apply for a waiver for Biol 121. Students with a waiver will be required to take an additional 200 level Biology course in order to complete the Molecular Biology Concentration.

In addition to the above, Biochemistry Majors who are completing a double major in Biology, with a Molecular Biology Concentration will be required to complete the following:

Biol 202 - Cell Biology and Biochemistry*
Biol 221 - Genetics and Molecular Biology*
    Biol 399 - Independent Study
    Biol 421 - Molecular Genetics

and two of the following options:
    Biol 354 - Developmental Biology
Biol 406 - Molecular Mechanisms of Infectious Disease Biology
Biol 407 - Cancer Cell Biology
Biol 422 - Human Genetics and Genomics
Biol 425 - Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Superlab
    Biol 475 - Advanced Microbiology
Biol 480 - Advanced Cell Biology
    Biol 483 - Epigenetics
Biol 484 - Cell Motility and the Cytoskeleton
    Biol 540 - Genetic Analysis

*These courses are required as part of the Vagelos Scholars Program in Molecular Life Sciences.

Double Major in Biology for Biochemistry Majors

(for students who do not wish to complete a Molecular Biology Concentration)

A student who has completed a Biochemistry Major has already satisfied the Chemistry and Math requirements for the Biology Major. For Biochemistry Majors, Chem 451 and 452 can be used to substitute for Biol 402 and one other of the "4 additional course units" required for the major.

To satisfy the requirement for introductory biology, Biochemistry Majors may take Biol 121 and follow Track 1 in the major. Specifically, Biochemistry Majors who are completing a double major in Biology will be required to complete:

    - four 200-level biology courses, representing four different course categories*

    - two additional course units selected from Biol courses at the 200 level or above or Biol 140.

Alternatively, a student who has grades of B or better in at least two semesters of Chemistry taken at Penn; has completed Chem 251 with a B or better; and has taken (or is currently enrolled) in Chem 241, can apply for a waiver for Biol 121. Students with a waiver will be required to follow Track 1 with the wavier counting in place of BIOL 121. Students with a waiver will be required to take:

    - four 200-level biology courses, representing four different course categories*

    - three additional course units selected from Biol courses at the 200 level or above or Biol 140

    - one of the intermediate or advanced courses must be a laboratory or field course (see the list of approved lab and field courses).

See the Biology Major Manual for additional information concerning options and requirements.

*These courses include Biol 202 and Biol 221 which are required for students in the Vagelos program.
