(a) This plan assumes students are following Track
2 of the Biology major. If following Track 1, Biol 121 can
be taken either in the fall or spring semester and should be
followed by Biol 124 and either Biol 230 or Biol 240 as the required
additional 200-level course.
In their freshman and sophomore years, students
should complete introductory biology and most of the required
chemistry and physics courses including:
- At least 3 semesters
of Chemistry chosen from: Chem 101 &
53 (or Chem 1 & 51); Chem 102 & 54; Chem 241; Chem
242. Chem 241 should be taken by the end of sophomore
year. Students are encouraged, but not required, to take a
second semester of organic chemistry (Chem 242) as a free elective.
- 2 semesters of Physics chosen from: Phys 101 or 150 and Phys
102 or 151.
* Note: 4 cu of chemistry (the introductory
chemistry with labs and CHEM 241) will count for the major. The
Physics courses and any additional organic chemistry will count
as free electives for the general education requirements (see "b"
below).
(b) The College requires all
students to complete a total of 20.0 credit units outside the major.
These include courses fulfilling the various general education
requirements plus some free electives. The foreign language and
writing requirements are specifically identified on the schedule
because these should be taken during freshman year. For information
on the General Education curriculum, please see http://www.college.upenn.edu/curriculum/2010/index.php
(c) Two semesters of math are required for the Biology major. This
requirement can be fulfilled by taking two semesters of calculus
(Math 104 followed by Math 115 or 114) or a semester of calculus
and a semester of statistics (Math 104 followed by Biol 446 or Stat
111 or Stat 102). Biol 446 may be counted toward
the Math requirement or as an additional Biology course but not
toward both.
(d) Biol 202 and 221 are recommended intermediate
courses, as they provide strong general background for dental
education. However, the student is free to replace either
of these with Biol 230 or 240. Other 200-level
courses (including Biol 219, 231, 251, or 275) may be taken as
an "Additional Biol course", but may not be used in place of 202
or 221. A Dental School Submatriculation student should not take
Biol 215, 306, 402, 475, or 476 since submatriculation students
receive credit for these courses after completing corresponding
courses taken during their first year of Dental School.
Notes:
- The College requires at least 28 cus
to be taken in the College in
order to graduate with a Biology Major (16 in the
College and 12 in the major). The
remaining 8 courses can
then be taken in the Dental School.
- Applicants for the 7-Year
Dental Plan are only accepted at the time of admission
to Penn, before freshman year begins.
- Biodental students
must maintain an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher and a
GPA of 3.5 or higher in their science courses.
- Biodental
students must take their DATs no later than October
1 of their junior year.
- See
the Biology
Major Manual for a complete description
of the Biology Major.
