Organisms often live in complex communities and many defining features of organisms are shaped by their ecological context. In this talk I will examine different cases in which microbial cells interact with their environment, affecting ecological dynamics and evolutionary trajectories. System thinking and a better understanding of physical and physiological constraints can help us understand how the structure and function of communities shapes evolutionary pathways, and how, as organisms evolve, they change community structure and function
