BIOL197 - DISCO&IMPLEM IN LIFE SCI

The objective of this independent study project is to investigate the discovery process in the life sciences. Emphasis will be placed on the interface between life sciences research and its realization through case studies that highlight the difficult transition from discovery in the laboratory to implementation. Each project will not only incorporate peer-reviewed scientific literature but also the successes, failures and near-misses in the discovery process through interviews, reference to other science and/or industry commentaries, and, when practicable, primary (sometimes unpublished) sources. Students will be expected to consider the roles of publicly or privately funded basic scientific research, publicly or privately funded research and development, incentives, as well as financing, pricing, and marketing strategies.
